Alger Hardware: Local Business Making Global Change

Alger Hardware: Local Business Making Global Change

Alger Hardware and Rental is a locally owned and operated hardware store in
the Alger Heights neighborhood of Grand Rapids, MI. A hardware store has
occupied the space there for over sixty years, but once now owner Bill
DeJong moved in almost 18 years ago, he made it a point to engage with the
community in a new way.

Part of their ongoing efforts to give back include donating supplies, gift
cards, and merchandise to local groups. The appreciation from the community
has made the store a mainstay in recent years.

This past year, Bill wanted to expand the scope of what he was doing to
positively affect the world around him through his store. He started
offering customers the opportunity to donate a dollar to Connect for Water
with their purchase to provide a clear path to clean water for those in
need.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with many customers appreciating the opportunity and taking more information about Connect for Water and their work.

The store is excited to continue offering customers the opportunity to
easily give while handling errands, with each small contribution adding to
the larger goal of bringing clean water to those in need.

2.1 billion people don’t have clean, safe water in their homes to drink.

It’s a staggering number. A representation of a problem so large that not only does it seem impossible to ever fix, sometimes the facts make it seem like it’s impossible to help in any way at all. Each of us is just one person, trying to attack a global problem. Does what we have to offer even have the ability to make a meaningful impact on 2.1 billion lives?

Maybe. But why don’t we start with 5?

Becoming a Water Sponsor means you are committed to impacting lives around the world with clean, safe water. A gift of $5 a month for one year gives 5 people clean, safe water in their homes for the next 5 years. It really is that simple.

Access to clean water means that these people will be able to live healthier lives, with fewer visits to the clinic and no more grappling with water borne illnesses. It will enable children to attend school, grow to their full potential, and have a bright future.

Team Classic Cottages

A Preschool, A Classroom & A City

Classic Cottages is sponsoring a team of people organized to run in an effort to raise funds to support the clean water initiatives of Connect For Water.

Specifically, these funds are targeted to help in Africa with these projects;
Pride and Purpose Preschool, A Classroom in Botswana and place as many as
300 Kohler Clarity water filters in schools in the Municipality Lepaterique, Honduras.

The Idea:

A few of the team members at Classic Cottages LLC decided they wanted to raise money for a good cause that is closely linked to the industry in which they work. Kimberly Musser and Elainna Wright have formed a running team to run the Baltimore Half Marathon on October 20th.

Several of their preferred industry partners have graciously sponsored this initiative. Additionally, they are asking their networks to participate by donating in order to grow this cause and see how many funds can be raised leading up to race day.

Pride n Purpose Preschool

Pride ‘n Purpose (PnP) is Ulusaba Game Reserve’s charitable arm committed to helping disadvantaged communities living adjacent to the Sabi Sand Reserve. Originally established in 2003 by members of the Ulusaba family. PnP now benefits over 35,000 people across seven communities. PnP’s philosophy is that people are most effectively helped if they are empowered to help themselves.

A Classroom in Botswana

Mabele Primary School educates about 176 children from ages 6-12 years old. Mabele is about 40 miles from Kasane. All of these communities are on the northern border of Botswana bordered by Namibia by the Chobe River. to the East by Zimbabwe and barely touching Zaire at the Zambezi River which flows into Victoria Falls.

The Municipality of Lepaterique

The Municipality of Lepaterique, has a total population of 13,415 inhabitants. Their water sources come from the mountains where the main rivers form. The responsible institutions do not carry out water quality analysis to ensure that water is safe for consumption, nor do they carry out actions for the protection of water sources and wastewater treatment.

Having the Kohler Clarity Systems will not only provide a clean and consistent source of drinking water but will create a way for water to be stored and used in the classrooms and households.

The Kohler Clarity System filters out more than 99% of bacteria and protozoa. One Clarity system provides up to 40 liters of safe water each day – enough for a small family.

Created with the same high standards of quality and design as everything Kohler creates the Clarity system is incredibly simple to use and maintain.

KOHLER Co. has a long history of seamlessly blending form and function in product design. The Clarity safe water filter is KOHLER’s first product born from Innovation for Good, focused on creating life-improving products.

Approximately 1.8 billion people are affected by unsafe drinking water worldwide. KOHLER Clarity is designed to help. By filtering out more than 99% of bacteria and protozoa, it provides up to 40 liters of safe water each day – enough for a small family. Addressing the demand both for clean water and quality products, KOHLER Clarity fills an important need to increase access to desirable solutions for safe drinking water.

In order to reach the people who need safe water most, Kohler partners with Business Connect, a network of independent entrepreneurs working in many disadvantaged places around the world.

By working with charitable donations given generously to Connect for Water, Business Connect is able to amplify its support to small businesses delivering life-changing products in difficult geographies – and donating the gift of safe water to the most disadvantaged households.

KOHLER’s Clarity Water Filter filters out more that 99% of all bacteria & protozoa while providing up to 40 liters of safe water daily – enough for a small family.
